As people grow older, they're more likely to become dehydrated. This is because you are more likely to fall into the bad habit of inadequate water  intake, begin taking medications like diuretics, and the fact that aging itself leads people to lose their sense of thirst.

Dehydration in children is largely caused by fevers, diarrhea, and a decreased ability to eat and drink when dealing with a bacterial or viral infection. Children will often times forget to drink because they do not have good hydration habits.
